π Day 3: One-Day Guided Tour
On my third day in Marrakech, I joined a one-day guided tour that showed more aspects of Morocco. After a traditional Moroccan breakfast, our first stop was the Women’s Cooperative of Argan Oil, where I learned about the production of this liquid gold. π«
From there, we headed to Imlil Village in the High Atlas Mountains. A 30-minute hike led us to cute waterfalls. The chicken tagine lunch was delicious. The highlight of the day was definitely the camel ride through the Agafay Desert. πͺ Although the desert was not really what I expected but I didn’t have the time to go further into the Sahara Desert. Plus, the whole tour was only $21, what more do you ask for?
Overall it was a great tour to experience other aspects of Morocco – village, mountain, waterfalls, desert and more.
Travel Tip: If you’re considering a guided tour, make sure to book in advance, especially during peak travel seasons. Also, don’t forget to bring sunscreen, sufficient water and a hat to protect yourself from the Moroccan sun!
π Day 4: Discovery Continues
Morning
My first stop on day 4 was Jardin Majorelle, a beautiful botanical garden filled with exotic plants and vibrant colors. The famous blue villa, once owned by Yves Saint Laurent, added a touch of artistic flair to the already breathtaking scenery. πΏThe vibrant blue across the garden, known as Majorelle Blue, is an unique color created by the artist Jacques Majorelle in the 1920s, and has become a symbol of Marrakech.
After that, I strolled over to Gueliz, the modern side of Marrakech that still keeps the city’s signature red vibe. It was cool to see how the neighborhood blends the old and new – the red buildings give it that classic Marrakech feel, while the commercial stores bring a more contemporary touch. I also noticed how locals love to chill outside of the restaurants and cafes, sipping on mint tea. Really love this laid-back vibe.
Travel Tip: When taking a taxi in Marrakech,Β always make sure the driver turns on the meter,Β or negotiate a reasonable price before getting into the car.
Afternoon
In the afternoon, I taxied back to Jemaa el-Fnaa and checked out the Souks for my souvenir shopping. It’s like a maze filled with shops selling spices, textiles, ceramics, and food. ποΈ Each souk around Jemaa el-Fnaa offers different products. For more details on the different souks and what to expect, check out my π²π¦ Marrakesh Travel Guide – Things to Know Before Planning.
Travel Tip: When shopping in the Souks, be prepared to negotiate prices. Aim for around half of the initial offer, and don’t be afraid to walk away if you feel the price is too high. Also, keep an eye on your belongings – the crowded markets can be a prime spot for pickpockets.
π Day 5: Saying Goodbye to Marrakech
On my final day in Marrakech, I kept some time for more souvenir shopping in the Medina to bring a piece of Morocco back home with me. Got some argan oil, lip balms, and of course, magnets LOL ποΈ
Before leaving, I sat on the rooftop across from Saadian Tombs, enjoying my delicious olive snack and lamb kebab while reflecting on my time in Marrakech. The city is rooted in deep faith and tradition that have shaped the core values of its people, yet there’s also a layer of reservation and slyness in the mix – perhaps a survival instinct passed down through the centuries. The locals are warm and welcoming, but thereβs always a hint of guardedness that keeps you on your toes. Marrakech knows how to live comfortably in the desert, and its ancient royalty certainly lived their most luxurious lives. Iβve learned so much about Morocco – its beliefs, traditions, cuisine, and people. Grateful for everything this city has shared with me.
